Dr. (Mrs.) Oluyinka Folashade Phillips (née Bello), aged 82, peacefully passed away on August 19, 2025. She will be cherished for her loving nature and steadfast commitment to God, her family and profession.

Dr. (Mrs.) Oluyinka Folashade Phillips is survived by her husband, children, grandchildren, siblings, nieces, and nephews.

Biography

Dr (Mrs) Oluyinka Folasade Phillips was born on the 27th June, 1943, to the family of late Mr Zaccheus Akintunde and late Mrs Caroline Adeyoola Bello of Elekuro, Ibadan, Oyo State.

Her early education took place in Ibadan at Wesley College Practising School and Yejide Girls’ Grammar School. She then moved to Lagos, where she combined her studies at the Emergency Science School with a job as a clerk at the Post and Telegrams office. She enrolled in a preliminary medicine course at the University of Lagos and went ahead to study Medicine at the same institution. Dr Phillips graduated as a medical practitioner from the College of Medicine, Idi-Araba in 1973. Thereafter, she had her internship at Adeoyo Hospital in Ibadan and proceeded to fulfil her National Youth Service Corps duties at the Family Joint Hospital in Ikom, Cross River State.

After working as a medical officer at various hospitals in Lagos, she established her own family medicine practice, Maranatha Hospital in 1980. She became a fellow of the West African College of Physicians (FWACP) in 1993 and she participated as an examiner for the college on numerous occasions. She was a deeply devoted and loyal member of the Association of General and Private Medical Practitioners of Nigeria (AGPMPN). In recognition of her service and dedication, she was honored with an award by the Association in 2008. She remained consistent at its meetings and worked tirelessly to support the growth and progress of the Association. Throughout her career, Dr Phillips was known for her commitment to providing charitable medical care through her hospital, especially to those who could ill afford it. She retired from medical practice in 2018.

Her life of service extended beyond her professional career as she engaged in entrepreneurial activities. She inherited her entrepreneurial spirit from her Mother, Mrs Caroline Adeyola Bello (Iya Alaso).

As a devoted servant of God, she served the Lord in various capacities. At New Estate Baptist Church Surulere, she served as the Director of the Children Ministry and a Counselor for the Teenage Ministry. She was one of the pioneering members of New Heritage Baptist Church Shomolu where she served as the Teenagers Coordinator, Akoka Home Fellowship Leader, WMU President, Head of the church Medical Team, and Music Director. She was named “The Mother of the Year” by the Women’s Missionary Union (WMU) of New Heritage Baptist Church in 1998. Dr (Mrs) Phillips had a passion for mentoring young people, providing guidance and support that made a lasting impact on their lives.

Dr Phillips was a great lover of sports. She participated in many sports events, especially at Ikoyi. Club, where she excelled and won several medals in activities such as table tennis, scrabble and ayo. She never missed any of her grandchildren’s sporting events.

Oluyinka Folasade married the love of her life, Deacon Bolaji Olufuyi Phillips on 24th April, 1976. The marriage is blessed with children and grandchildren. Dr (Mrs) Phillips’ life is a testament to her unwavering commitment to caring for others.
